“Oonte” in oshindonga, a local native language, means "rays”.

"Oonte OVC Organization is a non-profit welfare organization that supports over 650 orphans and Vulnerable children in Ondangwa, Namibia."

Oonte’s mission is to take the rays of Jesus’ love to each needy child so that each child may reach his or her God-given potential.

Educational & Vocational Support

Educational & Vocational Support

Oonte encourages each child to register and attend school by applying for bursaries and paying school, hotel and examination fees. Oonte provides school uniforms, books and other school supplies. Oonte Provides vocational support by providing training on integrated gardening, computer skills and other vocational training. Oonte early childhood development for extremely needy children.

OVC Protection Services

Oonte prioritizes the safety of OVCs. Children are not pressurized to make  disclosure of information. Set times are aimed for individual meetings with children as required. Stigma and discrimination is actively addressed in all the Oonte programs. HIV/AIDS prevention messages are disseminated in Oonte programs for educational purposes. Referrals are made when necessary. Confidentially is assured to all individuals Oonte supports.

Food & Nutritional Support

Oonte targets children in extreme poverty. Oonte  provides 5 good nutritional meals a week to the children after school. Oonte provide supplementary food through food parcels to households to ensure good and healthy food for the children. Oonte  provides and train families in gardening skills through its hope garden project. Namib Mills have been donating Maize meal and Macaroni on a monthly based since 2010  up to date

Oonte addresses the general health needs and awareness for  children through short term camps, kids clubs after school programs. Oonte does informal counseling sessions addressing health related issues including HIV/AIDS prevention and support. Oonte works with volunteers who are trained to provide home based care to OVCs. Oonte recently renovated a donated trailer which it hopes to use for private counselling on health related issues. Oonte provide parenting programs Community members are trained in basic hygiene for preventative health care and to recognize and refer children in need.

Through short term camps, after school programs and informal counselling, Oonte provides psycho-social and emotional support to the children. These programs emphasize good character development through the identification of life goals, spiritual development, and life skills education and training. Oonte has cultural activities such as a choir and dance group. Oonte has Sunday School Services for the children. Oonte mobilize communities to sensitize care-givers and all community members on their roles and responsibility to actively support access to quality education for all children.

Economic Opportunity & Strengthening

Economic Opportunity & Strengthening

Oonte has also begun several economic strengthening opportunities. For example, through the gracious support of CAFO,UNICEF and other generous donors. Oonte started an integrated gardening project which includes three types of gardens-micro-drip, hydroponic and dry crop. It also includes chicken, pigs and a fish pond stocked with over 2000 tilapia. This integrated project provides much needed basic nutritional support to the OVC’s as well as income for Oonte’s support programs . It also serves as a training center for the OVC’s and Other community members.

Shelter & Care

Shelter & Care

Oonte Village assesses that the shelter is physically safe. Visits occur at least once every month. Village volunteers address the following topics such as caring for the sick, first aid, managing the household, cooking, cleaning and child care. Manage conflict,grief, encourage play, record memories be responsible in relation to sex, drugs and alcohol. Provide limited assistance and referral with follow-up to local social service unit, approximate government ministry, local headman or women church leaders and psycho social professionals. Oonte works closely with child line lifeline. Provide clothing, shelter and hygiene for children in these household, and advise them to dress proper. Oonte  encourage donations of good second hand clothes for children

Oonte’s Children love to sing!

 

  • Oonte  children‘s choir recorded a holiday CD. Over 2000 Copies were sold in Four countries including Namibia, The Netherlands, Australia and the U.S.A!
  • Oonte is also developing partnerships with local tourist companies so that  tourist can visit Oonte and learn about the Oshiwambo Culture through dancing, songs and traditional food and drink.
